Dos Passos was a creative novelist where in his writing he analyzed his love/hate relationship with the traditions of American life and consistently questioned the American dream (Wagner-Martin). His full name was John Roderigo Dos Passos. He was born on January 14th, 1896 in Chicago Illinois. The Soviet-German War is the most brutal episode of the most vicious war that mankind has ever seen (Clark 1). During the "Great Patriotic War", as Joseph Stalin coins it, the Soviet Union emerges through pure tenacity as one of the world's great superpowers. Although Stalin and the USSR emerge victorious, the sacrifices made are enormous (Clark 446). Estimates show between 20-25 million Soviets die from 1941-1945. Only 7-8 million Germans die during this same period (Encarta). Many of these deaths are a direct result of the brilliant (sometimes insane) chess match between two of the most tyrannical leaders in history: Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin. Even today, some people ponder which leader fits the anti-Christ description best. The finest way to analyze the minds of these two leaders is to examine each dictator's rise to power, the motives which led to the "unholy alliance", and the initial offensive campaigns that each dictator launches. Born on December 21, 1877, Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili's father is a drunkard and his mother is a washer struggling to support the family. Dzhugashvili will later be known to the world as Joseph Stalin (Encarta). Stalin's mother, Ekaterina Georgievna, is a dedicated member of the Orthodox Church and enters him into the Seminary at Tifilis(Georgia) in 1894 for the study of priesthood in the Georgian Orthodox church. Soon after Stalin becomes part of the illegal Marxist movement (Encarta). The young Stalin quickly rises to the rank of leader of his own Marxist circle. In May of 1899, he is expelled from school just short of graduation in which later communist literature criedits to "political balance" (Encarta). By this time, Joseph Stalin has become more immersed in his role as a professional agitator of the system. While working as an accountant in Tbilisi, Stalin joins the Social-Democratic Workers' Party. In 1900 and 1901 he leads railway strikes and demonstrations which catc hes the attention of the imperial police. He is captured for the first time and is exiled to Siberia in 1903; but the feisty Stalin escapes and by 1904 he is back in Georgia. Between the period of 1903 and 1913, the imperial police capture Stalin a total of seven times for revolutionary activity. He escapes numerous times to come back and wreak chaos on the Czarist government. When the RSDLP split into the Menshevik and Bolshevik factions, Stalin's need for disruptance leads him to the Bolsheviks, the more militant of the groups(Encarta) In late 1905, he travels as a Caucasian delegate to the secret Bolshevik conference in Finland. It is here that he meets Vladimir Lenin. Stalin quickly becomes one of Lenin's most trusted lieutenants; his main priority going to raising money for the party. Lenin promotes Stalin to the Central Committee, which is the Bolsheviks leading body in 1912 (Encarta). During this time Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili adopts the name Joseph Stalin, which in Russian Stalin means "man of steel" (Encarta). By this time the Stalin that the world knows best begins to evolve. In 1922, the Central Committee of the new Bolshevik government elects Stalin as Secretary General. Lenin then suffers his first major stroke. This is the most important turning point in Stalin's rise to power. With Lenin bedridden for the last years of his life, Stalin uses his closeness to Lenin as a means of quickly rising past the normal orders of succession that Lenin put in place. In the last moments of his life, Lenin begins to realize that Stalin is an aggressive tyrant who will stop at nothing for absolute power (Encarta). Lenin's final political "testament" displays his doubts about having Stalin as the Secretary General and even asks that Stalin is removed from office. Lenin also suggests that one of his other understudies, Trotsky, should replace him. Fitzgerald was born to Edward and Mollie Fitzgerald on September 24th 1896 In Saint Paul Minnesota. Since his parents were strong Catholics, they sent him to two different private schools. The first one was the Holy Angel in New York, and later after having some money problems they moved back to Minnesota and he tended SST Paul Academy. The most well known school that Fitzgerald went was Princeton. While he was there he wrote for the Nassau magazine as well as the Princeton Tiger school newspaper. He attended Princeton for a few years until World War One began. This novel spooned greatly and was an instant, famous American novel at the time. After a few short stories for magazines such as Winter Dreams, he published his second novel, The Great Gatsby. This novel was also a great success and the American public loved his work. Fitzgerald wrote his best work when he was the most popular (Bryant and Pits 5). However, after The Great Gatsby, his career In writing started to go downhill E was dead as an author before he was dead (Chain. E. Charles 77). This was because he and his lovely wife were partying every day, and they had become heavy drinkers. By the near end of Fitzgerald life, everything was completely broken. His wife was in a hospital because she was having Psychotic episodes, and he had a really bad habit of abusing alcohol. He passed away by the age of forty four. However, the fantasies that Dexter has for Judy cannot play out because of the class difference between Judy and Dexter. Judos family is considered wealthy Judy Dexter decides to get rich and become part of the wealthy life. After college Dexter invests in a laundry business at a town near his home town in Minnesota. This brings Dexter a great deal of money and now he is considered rich. Due to the money e now has he tried his best to fit with the wealthy people in the town. However, he will never be like them because of the fact that he is new money while the others are old money. His plan of getting rich and then getting Judy somewhat plays out right; he gets invited to dinner with the Jones family by Judy. When Dexter is in Judy room he knows that she has had many lovers before but he does not seem to care. Time passes by and one day Dexter realizes that Judy does not actually love him, and he realizes how crazy he was being. To get away from his mistakes he marries a girl named Irene and attempts to forget everything he can about Judy. A few years after his marriage Dexter ends up having an affair with Judy, having realized once again how stupid he was being he moved to east New York with his wife. While he was there he decided to Join the army and take part in WWW. When he returns from the war he learns that Judy Jones is now married, and not only that she has lost the stunning beauty Dexter once loved her for. That is when Dexter knows that his Winter Dreams of being with Judy and all of her money is not gone and he cant ever get it back. Winter Dreams and Fitzgerald life have a direct connection to each other. Dexter lives in a Minnesota for most of the short story and then moved to East New York. These were also the two places that Fitzgerald lived during his life time, he was schooled in New York when he was a boy and later moved to Minnesota due to money troubles. The two main characters in the short story, Dexter and Judy, represent Fitzgerald own love life that he has with Zelda. In the short story Dexter proposes to Judy, and gets rejected. This also happened to Fitzgerald when he first reposed to Zelda. Winter Dreams also shows a direct connection to Fitzgerald personal life as well. This was the story that made him popular with the American reading public. The Great Starvation of Ireland I.The starvation in Ireland: 1845-1852 Over the years, the people of Ireland have suffered many hardships, but none compare to the devastation brought by the Irish potato famine of 1845-1857. A poorly managed nation together with ideally wicked weather conditions brought Ireland to the brink of disaster. It was a combination of social, political and economic factors that pushed it over the edge. After a long wet summer, the potato blight first appeared in Wexford and Waterford in September of 1845. The phytophora infestans were carried in on ships from Europe and America. Less than a year later, in August of 1846, virtually the entire potato crop in Ireland had been destroyed. The following winter became unbearable for the already starving nation. The westerly winds, which usually brought warmer air, failed, letting cold conditions from Scandinavia and Russia overtake the island of Ireland. The effects of malnutrition from starvation combined with the unusually cold temperatures aided in the spread of disease and ultimately death among the nation of Ireland. Starvation, respiratory disease, typhus epidemics, cholera, dysentery, scurvy, and deficiencies in vitamin A, all contributed to the loss of over a million Irishmen over a seven-year period. The practice of medicine at the onset of the blight was extremely inadequate. Ireland had only 39 infirmaries; this transla ted into one clinic for every 366,000 people. When looking at these numbers, one can easily understand why so many perished. Many of the deaths during the famine were never recorded, because of this the death toll may never be known. The number of deaths related to starvation is estimated to range from one to one and a half million people. According to Don Mullan, 200-300 mass graves were discovered, and in each grave over 1,000 bodies were identified. The infant mortality rate in some areas reached 50%. Relief from the British government was slow and insignificant. The economic policies that existed were unhelpful and the British Parliament refused to make adjustments to provide for a national disaster. No free food was offered to the starving people as long as there was food for sale.

Marcellus Lopez Mr. Buckley Honors American Literature September 20, 2011 Abdulrahman Zeitoun, Not Clark Kent Zeitoun, a fantastic novel by author Dave Eggers is a heroic tale of faith and courage set during Hurricane Katrina of August 2005, in New Orleans, Louisiana. The hardy protagonist of the chronicle is Abdulrahman Zeitoun, a Syrian man, living in Louisiana with his wife, Kathy, and his three daughters and stepson. Zeitoun, a former sailor, used to storms and seas, at the time of the hurricane owned a contracting business, building, repairing, and painting.Zeitoun's heroism and bravery have made very clear to me that being a hero is †¦ well, really damned stupid. If not that, then at the very least, being a hero is inadvisable and unwise. Zeitoun went far out of his way to help others in a whirlwind of charity and self-assurance. In doing so, he caused great damage to himself and those closest to him. Zeitoun went above and beyond what was asked of him to assist members of his community, ignoring the one thing asked of him by his worried wife, who demanded he evacuate with her and the family.Just as he had gotten into the momentum of routinely feeding some dogs abandoned by their owners daily, Zeitoun was arrested under false charges, rendering him unable to contact Kathy. His absence left his family distressed and disoriented. Kathy panicked hour by hour, praying to hear from her husband, with no such luck until much later. While Abdulrahman was missing, his family overseas was just as worried about him. His brother would call Kathy, personally urged to bend the truth about her husband's whereabouts. While Zeitoun was imprisoned, his family scrambled to get but a word from, him, not to mention the dogs died.I would stop and think at times in the story, does Zeitoun take the time to assess whether the possible consequences are worth the good he is trying to do? His time in prison shows him reflecting on the good he'd done, as well as praying for a be tter situation, but I do not recall one time at which he says to himself that he definitely should have left New Orleans. Did he not expect at all that in all the paranoia of a critical hurricane in a post-9/11 society that a Middle Eastern Muslim man would be a target for bigotry and used as a scapegoat?Although, his imprisonment was completely unwarranted, along with the charges brought against him and accusations made against him, nothing should have been a surprise to Zeitoun. Zeitoun was either unequipped with the knowledge that this country's ideals of justice are far from perfect and that the executive branch of our government is very prone to quick, harsh decisions and quick, definitive judgments†¦ or just not very thoughtful. The results of Zeitoun's poor decision to stay in New Orleans stuck to Kathy for the rest of what we read of her life in Zeitoun.Kathy's mental healthy was sacrificed all because Zeitoun foolishly remained in the city, with knowledge that a partic ularly dangerous storm was approaching. By the end of the story, I couldn't help but notice how much Abdulrahman's â€Å"courage† and â€Å"faith† resemble naivete. He stayed in New Orleans to ride out Katrina because he was obstinate and over-confident. It's fair to say that having been a sailor, he was rugged enough to handle a hurricane, but with a family and the understanding that many other people get mixed up in the spiraling torrent of a natural disaster, it is also fair to say that he could not have been prepared enough.Zeitoun tells that he felt called by God to help people in the storm, but this, I deduce, was no more than a rush he felt from completing a successful rescue. Everyone wants to be a hero. The sensation of doing good for others does more good for the good-doer than should be done. One of my favorite lyrics says, â€Å"When you help others, you can't help helping yourself. † For a man to be so complacent with an unpredictable force of natur e that he would be willing to let it come and see what happens is indubitably foolish.Abdulrahman refusing to evacuate with his wife very closely resembles a child on a playground, shouting to his mother, â€Å"No, Mommy! I don't wanna go! † Zeitoun, an informative novel by author Dave Eggers is a tale about how faith and â€Å"courage† can really screw things up. The foolhardy protagonist of the chronicle, Abdulrahman Zeitoun, shows us how being over-confident and letting ourselves become too comfortable can lastingly repercuss on the lives of our wife and family.
